Latham versus Harkin in 2008?

By Chris Woods | 06.07.07 | 1:20 pm

Will Republican Congressman Tom Latham (IA-04) challenge Democratic Senator Tom Harkin in 2008?

Jane Norman of the Des Moines Register adds to the speculation that Latham might be pondering a run, informing readers that Latham recently made the move from rural Franklin County, to Ames in Story County.

Latham told Norman that the move had nothing to do with pondering a bid for the Senate, but did not rule out a run.

Harkin has held his Senate seat since 1984.  He has faced numerous challenges from other sitting Congressmen and never lost.

Businessman Steve Rathje is the only other Republican candidate to declare he is running against Harkin next year.

Planning ahead By moving to Ames, Latham is sure not to be redistricted into the First District in 2010.

Latham Likely Losing Seat The reason for contemplating a Senate run is because Latham is likely to lose his Congressional seat in redistricting – his district is the only one that can be easily ‘split’ to make the population numbers work.
