How the media portrays African-American youth and the importance of civic participation are among the topics that will be discussed at Friday’s second annual State of Black Youth in Iowa Summit in Des Moines.
“The number one reason to come out to the summit is just to develop a greater knowledge base and increase your understanding of the topics,” said Eric Hall, 18, ex-president of the Des Moines NAACP’s Youth Council. “Get in the habit of becoming aware. Learn how to start doing that at the summit.”The theme summit is “Raising the Bar: From Awareness to Action.” The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Grand View College in the Student Center. The event is sponsored by the Des Moines’ NAACP Youth Council and Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
Hall said Democratic Presidential Candidate Sen. Barack Obama has caused a buzz of excitement among black youth because Obama is “youthful and black” so he expects a lot of conversation about voting at the summit.
“Voting is one of the simplest ways to voice our opinion to the government,” Hall said.
The summit is geared for teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 23. The discussion will include several topics:
