Grassley warns: Immigration bill with ‘amnesty’ has little chance

By Mike Lillis | 01.05.10 | 4:00 pm

Monday, reports emerged that liberal Democrats won’t push too hard to assist illegal immigrants under health care reform as long as the White House commits this year to separate immigration reform complete with a plan to provide a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the country. Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley issued a warning: In this political and economic environment, an “amnesty” provision stands little chance of passing through Congress.

“If people are insistent upon amnesty,” Grassley told local reporters, “whether it’s a general immigration reform bill or whether it is just an agriculture bill for guest workers, I think it’s going to be very difficult to get it passed. … I don’t see how you can in this environment, where we have a recession. Even though there may be workers needed in a certain aspect of the U.S. economy, it’s pretty difficult to bring up even a narrowly drafted one as long as the issue of amnesty is part of it.”

He might have added, “in this environment, where we have looming elections.”

Mike Lillis covers Congress for The Washington Independent, a Center for Independent Media site.

Can Americans and permanent residents conceivably imagine, that before President Obama signs into law this Comprehensive Immigration Reform. Millions of desperate people will try and cross the border fence? This is just as they did when President Ronald Reagan occupied the same Oval Office in 1986? Under the authorship of Senator Ted Kennedy, the number of illegal immigrants ready to be processed, instantly accelerated in numbers as they came out of the woodwork. After a promise of NO MORE AMNESTIES–after the Simpson/Mozzoli bill was pending, the obsolete Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was suddenly overwhelmed by unknown numbers of illegal aliens, who fraudulently adjusted their status to legal immigrant through bogus documentation.

The law stated you had to have resided on US soil for five years and able to prove it? Simple counterfeit documents were produced attesting to being in the country for that period. Once processed Millions deserted the agricultural jobs and spilled into the legitimate American labor force. Then the deluge of family members wanted to come and now America has not only become the land of fraudulent opportunity, but insipid politicians have allowed free access to American's education, health care and outlandish welfare dollars estimated in the hundreds of billions each year. Now the lawmakers have suckled though gross negligence on poor enforcing the border, to just complete and utter indifference to the American worker. This almost instantaneous infusion of discount labor, lowered wages and other benefits for the populace, producing unfair competition in employment for black, white, brown labor on the minimum wage scale. Its outrageous that roofing companies, dry wall, framers and every conceivable construction, entertainment and service industry have capitalized on illegal workers, taking away from legitimate businesses their ability to compete for bids.

Our health care system is badly broken, which has become a welfare entitlement to foreign nationals who can deliver babies in this country. Instant citizenship is not recognized in the majority of industrialized nation and has been allowed to propagate in the US, and has led to extreme expenditures by hospitals and the proverbial taxpayer.Even American colleges have become political pawns in the illegal immigration mess. Just as Illegal aliens get free treatment in the health care matrix, they are now demanding the right to in State tuition for their children? Yet American students have to pay high tuition payments, of which the federal government remains silent on the issue

This unsustainable greed cannot last much longer as wages fall and benefits are extinguished by the ruthless use of illegal labor. E-Verify, the local police 287 (g) with the power to arrest, didn't exist prior to President Bush introduction to the job market. From its inception E-Verify to stem illegal aliens from stealing jobs from millions of legitimized workers as part of the progressive SAVE ACT. Free trade under the NAFTA treaty became an abomination, as it deposed indigenous farmers from their income lands South of the border, thanks to US agricultural corporations. They needed to feed their families, so in their desperation they came looking for work in the United States. This catch 22 situation has appropriated lands in Mexico for US agricultural interests, at the same time forcing millions striving to reach this nation. As the Obama administration considers CIR, the numbers of illegal immigrants will rise in apportionment to the new AMNESTY law being to be enacted.

It might seem meaningless now, but if the rush to the border comes, as its been said by blogger's like me and even the press, whom normally have their fingers in their ears. That–NOTHING–will–STOP–the onslaught. The US Border Patrol needs to be enforced with the National Guard, because the numbers who try to force a way into America will freeze the brain. OUR COUNTRY HAS BEEN CRIPPLED BY ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND WILL CONTINUE TOO, BECAUSE OF POOR ENFORCEMENT. THE NUMBERS OF 12 TO 13 MILLION ALREADY HERE, DOESN'T ADD UP?

Those who have urged President Obama to enact this nonsensical AMNESTY, will be out-of-office, in the 2010 election year. Sen.Harry Reid (D-NV) leading the pack of wolves, will be the first to end up on the political funeral pyre. Those who come here from South of border and the very tip of South America, will enter with contagious diseases, criminal records and may be even terrorists. Those who slip across the Canadian border or through lengthy tourist lines at airport terminals could also be carriers of many viruses, not seen in America for fifty years.

All these millions of extra mouths to feed, will overload the government entitlement system and our crammed prisons. For many Americans this use of illegal labor and the consequences of Overpopulation seems the least of their worries, in this devastated economy. Perhaps it seems foolish to expect patriotic Americans to make their voices known, but if we do not stop this AMNESTY. We will be committing financial suicide for every legitimate person in this country, for every low skilled, unskilled US worker. Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121 to be connected to your Senator and Congressman and use the voting power of THE PEOPLE. There's no end to the amnesties.
Reagan's 1986 amnesty was the FIRST of seven amnesties for ILLEGAL ALIENS granted by congress….

    1. Immigration and Reform Control Act (IRCA), 1986: A blanket amnesty for some 2.7 million ILLEGAL ALIENS

    2. Section 245(i) Amnesty, 1994: A temporary rolling amnesty for 578,000 ILLEGAL ALIENS

    3. Section 245(i) Extension Amnesty, 1997: An extension of the rolling amnesty created in 1994

    4. Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act (NACARA) Amnesty, 1997: An amnesty for close to one million ILLEGAL ALIENS from Central America

    5. Haitian Refugee Immigration Fairness Act Amnesty (HRIFA), 1998: An amnesty for 125,000 ILLEGAL ALIENS aliens from Haiti

    6. Late Amnesty, 2000: An amnesty for an estimated 400,000 ILLEGAL ALIENS who claim they should have been amnestied under the 1986 IRCA amnesty

    7. LIFE Act Amnesty, 2000: A reinstatement of the rolling Section 245(i) amnesty, which covered an estimated 900,000 ILLEGAL ALIENS

This will be Amnesty No. 8

    Hi All,

America is a country of immigrants. People who came here have always been very enterprising and determined to make a great name for this country and for themselves and surely thenceforth this country has become the greatest on earth. All people who came here sacrificed their family and friends whom they left behind to achieve their dream in this land of opportunity. No wonder this country has thence become the best and greatest in the world. To discourage immigrants, who are competing in a global economy is not only detrimental to the continued greatness and prosperity of this country, but also harmful to all Americans and to our country by allowing us to rest on the laurels of our predecessors and expecting to be landed jobs in our lap without having to compete openly in this global village.

It is just plain commonsense that such an attitude is neither dignified nor patriotic and will only not only make us weaker as people and as a country but would also well result in losng our global leadership position and our prosperity. The only fair reason for anyone complaining should be if someone is not working as hard or as good but getting paid better and if that were to be happening here this country will begin in a downward spiral toward losing its prosperity and its global leadersip position.

The right thing for all Americans is to stop resting on the laurels of our predecessors and instead continue to show the same zeal and hard work that our forefathers displayed thus making this country the greatest. Indeed most Americans understand this and that is what continues to keep our country most prosperous. However some of us who like to just have what we are used to or what we want without wanting to openly compete in this global economy is just harming ourselves. It is neither right nor fair thinking but only harmful both in short term and the long term. Henceforth studies conducted by experts and universities recently continue to show that legalizing the immigrants, who are not criminals or drug traffickers is in the best interest of our country's economy and prosperity

I thus think that passing of the comprehensive immigration reform is in the best interest of Americans and our country. It will only continue to make our country prosperous and great. The only people who are harmful to our country are criminals/drug traffickers and they are the ones we should get rid of.

May God give us the courage and strength to continue to compete openly in this gobal village without fearing people who are better contributors than us and thus continue to keep this country the most prosperous and the most blessed nation on earth. Amen

Seems you have a probleming seeing the difference between immigrants and illegal immigrants.America is also a nation of laws, so why would you want to grant citizenship to those who dont respect our laws.

      • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/NNGGBHYEXRXAVMKCG4TRGUGY5Y Brian W

So wait, you are trying to be logical here plopsdad… saying “if they break laws they shouldn't be given citizenship” by that logic then – anyone who breaks a law should have their citizenship revoked. so have you ever choose to speed in your car on the freeway? get a ticket? slip on your honesty with taxes? anything? then by your own logic, you should have your citizenship revoked. it's silly. The law being broken is simply residing and working (i.e. contributing.) These are not violations in safety, health, and so forth. While there are sure to be “bad apples” in some illegal imm. so are there bad apples here at home. The average child molester is a white, middle aged man. Yet I don't see people generalizing that all white people who look shady are potential molesters. however, I do see this rampant attitude with regards to imm. (whether legal or otherwise – even to O'reley's silly view that terrorists will come in from mex.) Back to your point… if you want to block citizenship/residency for those who live here illegally… due to the fact they are “not respecting laws” then I say you must be logical about this and also demand that those citizens who have had any run in with the law (from speeding tickets on up) to have their citizenship put in jepoardy. We just don't think like that. This viewpoint is an ivory tower. You're just looking down on others who don't stand on your level of achievement. it's shameful.

        • plopsdad

Your logic is flawed, dont try putting words in my month. In my post i said nothing about revoking the citizenship of Citizens. You too cant seem to understand the difference between illegal alien and a citizen.Seems easy for you to say “oh they are only here working” , well what about the citizens who could be doing those jobs? Dont those citizens have to feed their families, doesnt CITIZENSHIP mean anything to you? And also keep in mind, that if those illegal aliens are working, they are actually breaking another law, thats 2, if working for a pyacheck and not cash, who's SSN number are they using? screwing up that persons life or credit which could take tears to get straight. Looking down, try reading my post again, with glasses, you might be able to actually read what i wrote instead of making it up

This hasn’t been a nation of immigrants for a very long time. This is a nation of Americans. Therein lays the problem for today’s immigrants.

When my ancestors immigrated to this country there was a condition; you must assimilate. This was a brand new experiment in humanity, and its success depended upon shedding the past and a committing to a new identity. An American identity.

While our ancestors cherished their old world traditions and taught them to us at home, they embraced their new culture and insisted we embrace it as well. They made a commitment. They made an extraordinary sacrifice in order to give their children the gift of American citizenship. And in doing so they defined America, and this American nation.

The legacy they left to their children and grandchildren was a country they could respect and depend upon, and in whose citizenship there was pride and honor. As long as they were true to America’s principles and obeyed the laws they would prosper and pass the legacy along. I am thankful everyday for their selfless gift.

As for the current tidal wave of immigrants both legal and illegal spilling onto our shores and crossing our borders, the essential condition of assimilation no longer seems to apply. Not only are they no longer required to learn our language and participate in our culture, but we have been bending over backwards to respect their customs and provide for them in their native tongue. They exhibit an obscene sense of entitlement, as though they offer some skill or knowledge that we are in dire need of. To add insult to injury they are not even required to bring something to the table. This is effectively eradicating America.

Those who are here under the guise of one of the many fraudulent visa programs crafted to provide essential labor, both “skilled” and “unskilled” have expectations of accommodation that would never be tolerated in their country of origin. Hundreds of thousand of them enter this country every year, and for each one of them an American is displaced. They live and work among us enjoying all the benefits of American citizenship with none of the responsibilities. They have no intention of ever becoming Americans or swearing allegiance to this country in which they prosper, instead they seek a permanent green card work permit. It debases and disgraces us all.

And then there are those here illegally, who have pushed American citizens out of their jobs, homes, and communities, who have depressed our wages to levels that cannot sustain a legal lifestyle, who have cost us in the billions for their schooling, welfare, and health care while putting next to nothing back. They refuse to learn the language and insist on adhering to their own culture, and then have the audacity to demand amnesty because after all, they are a vital part of our economy that we can’t function without.

The most contemptible thing about these two types of immigrants, beside the utter devastation they are inflicting on America, is the opportunity that we cannot extend to those who are trying to immigrate through the proper channels, who cherish this country and all it stands for as much as we Americans do, and aspire to become Americans themselves. This is unforgivable. I think I speak for all of us when I say we would welcome these immigrants with open arms.

We can no longer allow these abuses to our immigration policy to continue. Our very existence as Americans depends on adherence to our laws, and the implementation of a sensible immigration policy which first and foremost takes into consideration the impact of immigration on Americans. Nothing less is acceptable.

No, this is not a nation of immigrants. It is now and always will be a nation of Americans.

Though I barely got a passing grade in Economics 101 I totally understood “The Laws of Supply and Demand.” I also understand that our finite resources will be hard pressed to keep supporting the greatest population explosion in American history. CIR would not only give Amnesty to the 12 to 20 million IAs here now but would also create a flood of over 100 million more entrants to America through the insane “Family Reunification/Chain Migration” polices now in place.

I consider this to be a deliberate decreasing of the American Middle Class standards of living so as to create a global balance in a NWO. The Globalists can not achieve their desired goals as long as the citizens of a few nations have a standard of living so far above citizens of 3rd world nations. I, for one, enjoy the sovereignty of our Nation and have no desire to sacrifice the future of American children, my children to allow for a NWO!

Rampant population growth threatens our economy and quality of life. Immigration, both legal and illegal, are fueling this growth. I'm not talking about environmental degradation or resource depletion. I'm talking about the effect upon rising unemployment and poverty in America.

I should introduce myself. I am the author of a book titled “Five Short Blasts: A New Economic Theory Exposes The Fatal Flaw in Globalization and Its Consequences for America.” To make a long story short, my theory is that, as population density rises beyond some optimum level, per capita consumption of products begins to decline out of the need to conserve space. People who live in crowded conditions simply don’t have enough space to use and store many products. This declining per capita consumption, in the face of rising productivity (per capita output, which always rises), inevitably yields rising unemployment and poverty.

This theory has huge implications for U.S. policy toward population management, especially immigration policy. Our policies of encouraging high rates of immigration are rooted in the belief of economists that population growth is a good thing, fueling economic growth. Through most of human history, the interests of the common good and business (corporations) were both well-served by continuing population growth. For the common good, we needed more workers to man our factories, producing the goods needed for a high standard of living. This population growth translated into sales volume growth for corporations. Both were happy.

But, once an optimum population density is breached, their interests diverge. It is in the best interest of the common good to stabilize the population, avoiding an erosion of our quality of life through high unemployment and poverty. However, it is still in the interest of corporations to fuel population growth because, even though per capita consumption goes into decline, total consumption still increases. We now find ourselves in the position of having corporations and economists influencing public policy in a direction that is not in the best interest of the common good.

The U.N. ranks the U.S. with eight third world countries – India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, Uganda, Ethiopia and China – as accounting for fully half of the world’s population growth by 2050. It's absolutely imperative that our population be stabilized, and that's impossible without dramatically reining in immigration, both legal and illegal.

If you’re interested in learning more about this important new economic theory, I invite you to visit my web site at http://PeteMurphy.wordpress.com.
