Grassley expects no say in health care conference

By Jason Hancock | 12.30.09 | 12:41 pm

While he may be assigned to the conference committee expected to iron out differences between health care reform bills passed by the House and Senate, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley said all real power is in the hands of Democrats.

“I think this will be one of those instances, following along with the stimulus bill passed in February, where I’ll be a conferee but Democrats will huddle secretly and come to the conclusion of what they want to do, and then announce it and it’s a ‘take it or leave it.’” the Iowa Republican said on a conference call with reporters.

Health care reform has been a purely partisan process for months, Grassley said, and he doesn’t see that changing now that the bills as so close to being completed.

“In the case of the stimulus, Republicans left it because we didn’t have any input,” he said, adding: “As far as health care, it will be pretty much partisan in conference.”

If he could offer changes, Grassley said he would add limits to medical malpractice awards, kill the individual mandate and repeal cuts to Medicare Advantage.

As for the parts of the Senate bill he would leave alone, Grassley said he supports ending discrimination based on pre-existing conditions and forbidding caps on the amount of coverage a person can receive in a given year or in a lifetime.

After the Dems reached out to Grassley–the president named him specifically–as one to work toward a bipartisan compromise with, Grassley responded by embracing the Beck/Palin wing of the GOP (sadly, the mainstream of the party these days) spreading lies about the bill. During the recess he travelled to the reddest parts of the state as if he was starting his primary campaign instead of listening to the people he's supposed to represent. So what does he expect at this point? To be given a say in the final bill after lying and playing politics the whole time?

The constitution says you need 50 votes in the Senate to pass legislation. The founders never envisioned this abuse of parliamentary procedure. By abusing the filibuster, Grassley and the Reps put Sen Nelson in an extraordinarily strong position to win advantage for Nebraska. Grassley could have negotiated on behalf of Iowa and Iowans but instead he put Beck, Palin, and the national GOP “strategy” first. It seems to me that Senator Grassley has spent too long in DC; perhaps it's time to pull the plug on his career in the Senate.

Today's medical professional liability system is too adversarial and too expensive. There are alternatives. More at http://www.healthcaretownhall.com/?p=1779
