Medical marijuana vote postponed

By Jason Hancock | 12.15.09 | 10:58 am

A vote on the medical use of marijuana has been delayed until February, the Iowa Board of Pharmacy announced Monday.

The delay allows the board to read the 12,000 pages of written comments submitted in regards to the plan, which if approved would recommend that the state legislature legalize marijuana for medical problems. The vote will now take place at a public hearing Feb. 17 in the auditorium of the Iowa State Historical Building, 600 East Locust St., Des Moines. The meeting is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to  5 p.m.

In April, a Polk County judge ordered the Board of Pharmacy to at least consider whether marijuana has any acceptable medical uses. In July, the board decided to hold hearings on the issue and offer a recommendation to the legislature. Four hearings were held.

A state Senate subcommittee held a hearing in March on a bill sponsored by Sen. Joe Bolkcom of Iowa City that would have created the Medical Marijuana Act, allowing the possession and use of marijuana for therapeutic purposes. The bill, Senate File 293, never made it out of subcommittee.

The Bill – SF 293 – is being stalled. You guys are just stalling. It's been roundly established that cannabis medicine has therapeutic value, and that research and a medical exemption from prosecution is the order of the day. Why are you guys still dragging your feet with research and patient exemptions ??

This is a good example of how local governments can putz around and not get much done. Lots of hot air, but where are the results ? No wonder so many of your constituents are mis-trustful of their elected representatives, and City Hall in general. So many Americans are now sorely disappointed in all you elected (and salaried) people – because their lives, finances, savings, homes, or health are deteriorating, and you guys are yammering and pushing paper around.

Time to get things done and show the grass-roots who put you where you are that you can deliver the goods.

    Pass SF – 293 !! NOW !

I'm glad to see they're taking it slow. Los Angeles let things get out of hand and now they've got ~1000 dispensaries (most operating illegally, only 176 had permits) – search Hollywood, CA on http://www.weedneedz.com and you'll get a glimpse of what can happen if you don't keep on top of things!

I guess marijuana is not as bad as people say, I mean if this is the most light drug that exists and it doesn't make you addicted to it why don't you legalize it and people won't be forced to do something ilegal.
