Clear Lake church leaves ELCA over gay pastors

By Jason Hancock | 12.14.09 | 9:58 am

Members of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake voted to withdraw from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on Sunday because of the organization’s decision to allow homosexuals in committed relationship to serve as pastors, the Mason City Globe Gazette reports.

From the Globe Gazette:

The vote was 238 to 119, exactly the two-thirds majority vote needed for it to pass.

“I’m happy that they decided to go this direction because I think it sets the possibility for a new and stronger future for the congregation,” said Rev. Dean Hess, senior pastor at the Clear Lake church.

Carole Roth, church council president, said she was pleased with the results, too.

“Certainly God has spoken today,” she said.

Last month nine Iowa congregations joined a new sect of Lutheran churches, a signal that they were considering leaving the ELCA.

Now, while I think that the churches who are against this position are misguided on what God is trying to say to them on the matter, I do support their prerogative to affiliate themselves as they see fit, so this is a good thing. It would be nice if we would simply grant the same rights to everyone (life, marriage, etc.) and then the churches can segregate themselves and their beliefs as they see proper and fit, and members can believe what they choose. It would prevent so many headaches in the long run.
