Bike Wins Bike-Bus-Car Race

By John Deeth | 05.13.08 | 7:28 am

Iowa City council member Ross Wilburn rode two wheels to victory in Johnson County’s annual Bike To Work Week Bike-Bus-Car race Monday, returning the title in the annual event to the cyclists. But did a route change help?

The annual event is designed to emphasize the speed of bike commuting versus other transportation and features elected officials and other community leaders.Coralville City Council member Tom Gill finished second in his car, and county supervisor Rod Sullivan came in last on the bus.

This year’s race featured a route change. In past years, the race ran from Coralville’s Coral Ridge Mall to the Old Capitol Mall in downtown Iowa City.  In 2007, county supervisor Sally Stutsman used the newly opened Camp Cardinal Boulevard to drive her car (an SUV, no less) to the winner’s circle. This year, the starting point changed to Coralville City Hall, which necessitated a drive down the clogged bottleneck of Highway 6.
