Chelsea Clinton set to marry son of former Iowa congressman

By Lynda Waddington | 11.30.09 | 3:34 pm

The ceremony most likely won’t take place at the fabled Little Brown Church in Nashua, but will have Iowa ties just the same.

Friends of Chelsea Clinton received some happy news via e-mail this holiday weekend. The daughter of former President Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is now officially engaged to Marc Mezvinsky, investment banker and son of former Pennsylvania Congresswoman Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and former Iowa Congressman Ed Mezvinsky.

Ed Mezvinsky is a native of Ames who left Iowa for Pennsylvania in 1979 after a failed re-election bid to Congress. Although he attempted several statewide races in the Keystone State, he was never successful and instead served a stint as the chairman of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee.

In 2002, he admitted that he had bilked investors — including friends, law clients and even his late mother-in-law — out of more than $10 million. He was sentenced to 80 months in federal prison on fraud charges. He was released last year.

His wife, Margolies-Mezvinsky, who also served in Congress when Bill Clinton was president, was not charged with any wrongdoing. In fact, the schemes perpetrated by her husband dipped not only into her mother’s accounts, but her own inheritance and much of the family’s financial resources.

Marc Mezvinsky, 31, and Chelsea Clinton, 29, have been friends since they were teenagers. They both attended Stanford University and studied finance, and only became romantically involved a few years ago. The couple has  not yet set a date for their upcoming wedding, but did indicate in their e-mail to family and friends that the ceremony will likely be held in the summer. It is also unclear how the families will mesh their distinctly different religious backgrounds.
