A University of Iowa study reports that more than 93 percent of new Iowa prisoners suffer from mental illness, with a third classified as suicidal.
Researchers interviewed male and female non-violent offenders who were newly incarcerated mostly for drug offenses. The majority of the offenders also suffered from substance abuse problems and other disorders. About 30 percent of the inmates were considered suicidal, according to the report.
The researchers believe the disorders can contribute greatly to recidivism. They suggested improving the way prisoners are assessed and treated for their conditions, which could help them stay out of prison.
A researcher in a Des Moines Register story described the statistics as “alarming” but in line with other studies.
The study was published in the March 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.
