ANALYSIS: National Press Doesn’t Get Iowa — Again

By John Deeth | 04.27.08 | 9:36 am

“The headline out of Iowa is going to be ‘Obama gains one,’” I told my fellow delegates during casual conversations in the hours of down time at Saturday’s 2nd Congressional District Democratic convention.

So when I finally got home, and could access the national political blogs that for some reason the Mount Vernon School District’s wireless network had blocked, what did I read?

“Obama loses one.”

It’s the latest example of national political writers just not understanding Iowa’s caucus and convention process. On Thursday, I published a comprehensive look at the math that showed Obama taking 15 delegates, Clinton winning nine, and Edwards definitely getting two, with three delegates still in play, and one more delegate possibly shifting pending deals between candidates.

But national estimates ignored things like deals between candidates and the possibility of people just not showing up, and acted as if the numbers were set in stone. Those estimates allocated two more delegates to Obama and one to Edwards, for a 17-9-3 estimate.

On Saturday, Edwards gained viability in the 1st District, where he had been two people short of viability coming out of the Mar. 15 county conventions. My estimates had listed this seat as being in question, but national reports assumed Edwards would not be viable and that Obama would gain the delegate. This is what sites such as MyDD and Democratic Convention Watch are listing as the Obama “loss.” But like the old blues song says, you can’t lose what you never had. In fact, the truly accurate Iowa numbers before Saturday were Obama zero, Clinton zero, Edwards zero.

Meanwhile, in the 4th District, a deal that Iowa Independent reported between Edwards and “another campaign” — math would indicate Clinton — failed to materialize, and Obama gained a fourth delegate which I had listed as in doubt. But national sites, pretending Edwards did not exist, had already allocated this delegate to Obama, and are failing to report it as a gain.

It was a bit more fair for national sites to list the Edwards delegate in the 5th District as an Edwards hold. However, coming out of the county conventions Edwards was only viable by one person, so I had listed the seat as in question. That was a judgment call, as opposed to the inaccuracy of reports on the 1st and 4th Districts.

I was there at District 4 I was there at the Dist 4 convention and can say you are totally correct about the “deal” trying to be worked out with Edwards delegates with that “other” campaign. I am new to the Democratic Party (as of Jan when I caucused for Obama having voted Republican for 25 yrs)and when I heard of the deal being offered (to give the 52 Edwards Delegates the needed amount of people from the Clinton delegate for a total of 76 to be viable ONLY if that group elected one of those Clinton Delegates as the National Delegate for Edwards…DUH! That sounded so dirty and dumb) HOWEVER when the Edwards delegates passed on that and came marching down(40 out of 52) the isle for Obama, my faith in the fairness of politics was restored! It was so emotional as they came marching down and we were cheering and even some crying and hugging!! OH IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL THING! Here are my photos of the day and YES I agree you dont lose something you never had. It’s just spin, but in the end OBAMA HAD A HELLUVA DAY AND THAT CAN’T BE DISPUTED!!!!! Oh, and in our district, the credentials person said in their HISTORY of Dist 4 never has every delegate seat been seated (507) with left over alternate delegates! I was proud to be there and I am proud to be with OBAMA!!!

Obama Delegate for District 5 I completely agree with Sandi from District 4!  :)  I also switched from Republican to Democrat to stand for Obama and was a delegate at the District 5 Convention Saturday.  However, the strategy was different for our district.  The Obama group elected people to leave and stand for Edwards to support him to allow him to keep 1 delegate vs. having the Edwards people giving another delegate to Hillary.  :)  It worked out in the end to do it that way so I wonder if those strategies were also used in the other districts?  I’d like to see Obama run with Edwards personally!  :)

Obama campaign: We lost a delegate John

I certainly understand your point-of-view about whether Obama gained or lost a delegate on Saturday. But be careful who you accuse of “not understanding Iowa’s caucus and convention process”.

The Obama delegate site itself, as of 4/23, shows Obama with 25 pledged delegates out of Iowa. When they update it, it will show Obama with 24 delegates. So the Obama campaign agrees with 2008 Democratic Convention Watch, MyDD, Green Papers, CBS, AP, CNN, and NBC. Obama lost a projected national delegate in Iowa.

Well, then… the projections were wrong. I know it seems silly to say “we're right and everybody else was wrong,” but a more fair projection would have listed three seats as in question. (But thanks for the link.)
