Rep. Leonard Boswell, D-Iowa, was appointed Wednesday to serve on the conference committee that will negotiate the new farm bill.
The move by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to name conferees is a big step forward for the farm bill. According to rules of the U.S. House of Representatives, a conference report must be produced within 20 days of the appointment of a conference committee or the bill will become subject to procedural complications. The current farm bill expires on April 18.
The farm bill conference committee was scheduled to hold its first meeting today.
Iowa will be well represented on the conference committee. In addition to Boswell, Iowa will also be represented by Sen. Chuck Grassley, a Republican, and Sen. Tom Harkin, a Democrat who will chair the committee.
