Gov. Chet Culver has scheduled a press conference at 3 p.m. Wednesday to announce the plans for cutting $565 million from the state’s budget.

Culver announced earlier this month that the state would respond to dour revenue projects with a 10 percent across-the-board cut to the budget. No departments would be exempt and plans would have to be finalized by the end of October.

Last week, 36 department heads plus the leaders of the Iowa Board of Parole, the Iowa Public Employment Relations Board and the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board submitted preliminary budget cutting plans, which included 791 layoffs and 529 vacant positions left open. Culver immediately said he disagreed with many of the proposals and would work to ensure cuts did not have a “disproportionate impact on public safety.” For example, the Department of Corrections’ plan included eliminating 515 jobs.

Culver and his staff have been working with department heads for more than a week to finalize budget plans, and while layoffs and job cuts may not be as severe as originally thought, most still believe hundreds of jobs will be eliminated.
