Steve Clemons of The Washington Note has a devastating story up about the potentially criminal behind-the-scenes wrangling over U.S. policy toward Iran. According to Clemens, Vice President Dick Cheney is pushing hard for a hot war with Iran, while Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, backed by some unlikely allies at the Defense Department, is arguing for diplomacy. Although policy disagreements within administrations are common, Clemens says that Cheney and his staff, particularly an unnamed senior aide on Cheney's national security team, are preparing to totally upend the traditional policy-making process. This unnamed official has been making the rounds telling people that
"Vice President Cheney does not support President Bush's tack towards Condoleeza Rice’s diplomatic efforts and fears that the President is taking diplomacy with Iran too seriously. This White House official has stated to several Washington insiders that Cheney is planning to deploy an 'end run strategy' around the President if he and his team lose the policy argument."
According to a Clemens source, these actions could amount to “potentially criminal insubordination” against the president. Read the whole post to fully grasp the severity of the situation.
