Oak woodlands, tall-grass prairies and wetlands are the focus of Connie Mutel’s new book, “The Emerald Horizon: The History of Nature in Iowa.” She is the featured speaker at an event Tuesday in Iowa City.
Mutel will present her work at the “25th Annual Prairie Preview” at Montgomery Hall of the 4-H Fairgrounds at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Doors open at 6:30 and visitors can expect numerous conservation displays and information booths.
Mutel’s book gives a comprehensive blend of histories of Iowa, combining natural and human history. She explained, “It’s really a study of how humans have affected our natural history, and vice versa.”
She also said many feel the book’s strength is its focus on restoration of oak woodlands, but it also chronicles “the development of natural features in Iowa … the process of transforming Iowa to a working landscape … [and] how to restore nature to our current landscape.”
An author of several books, Mutel is also the historian and archivist for IIHR-Hydroscience & Engineering at the University of Iowa College of Engineering.
Those interested in Iowa wildlife and prairie, wetland and oak woodland restoration may wish to attend the event. Contact the Johnson County Heritage Trust for more information: (319) 857-4741 or visit http://www.jcht.org. The Prairie Preview starts at 6:30 pm at the county fairgrounds.
