Former UI student is first patient at Internet addiction center

By Lynda Waddington | 09.09.09 | 7:59 am

A 19-year-old who failed classes at the University of Iowa is now the first patient at a new five-acre rehabilitation center for those who suffer from Internet addiction.

Ben Alexander, 18, said that he failed his courses in Iowa City because he spent all of his time playing “World of Warcraft” via the Internet.

Alexander is a tall, quiet young man who always got good grades and hopes to become a biologist.

He started playing “World of Warcraft,” a hugely popular online multiplayer role playing game, about a year ago, and got sucked right in.

“At first it was a couple of hours a day,” he said. “By midway through the first semester, I was playing 16 or 17 hours a day.

“School wasn’t interesting,” he said. “It was an easy way to socialize and meet people.”

Internet addiction is not officially recognized as a disorder by the American Psychiatric Association, and treatment through the new residential program in Washington is not covered by most insurance plans. There are, however, treatment centers in several Asian countries where the addiction is taken more seriously.

Alexander is the first and only patient at this U.S. facility, which claims it can provide cold turkey services to up to six patients at a time.

I don't think it's fair to call it internet addiction. It's gaming addiction and it wouldn't even be a bad thing if the student would have moderated it in order to pass his exams. It seems fair that most addiction treatments for gaming are in Asian countries because everybody knows Asians have the most young gamers.

Drugs are addictive and I spent a month in the drug rehab facility Washington to be able to shake them off. Internet, although used in excess, can not do so much harm to earn it's place among addictions.

This is just a marketing strategy to attract people who don't have a firm grip on their lives. Drug and alcohol rehab centers are real, they deal with serious problems, internet addiction is just an invention.

I think that the title of “internet addiction” is a bit far fetched. I'd call it gaming addiction. It's true that some people only have a social life in a virtual environment but I don't think that any drug treatments will cure that. I'm sure that after a few sessions with a psychologist they will be able to realize what they are missing out in life.

It seems that internet addiction became a serious problems nowadays. Too many youngsters are destroying their health and social lives over internet games. California drug rehab center has created a special programs for those with such problems allowing them to get back on track.
