Matt Schultz, a Republican city councilman from Council Bluffs, has announced he is considering a run against incumbent Secretary of State Michael Mauro, a Democrat from Des Moines.

Schultz has formally organized the “Friends of Matt Schultz” committee with the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure board to explore a run against Mauro, who was first elected in 2006. He has also set up a Web site, VoteMattSchultz.com, which so far only has links to his Facebook, Twitter and YouTube profiles.

Schultz is an attorney at the law firm of Coats, Schultz & Watson LLP first elected to the city council in 2005.

The last Republican to hold the position of Secretary of State was Paul Pate, who served one term and chose not to run for re-election in 1998 in order to mount an unsuccessful bid for governor. Current Gov. Chet Culver won the post that year.
