Long-shot candidate Ron Paul won Jefferson County on Thursday night, gaining the support of Libertarians in a county where campaign officials expected the Texas congressman to do well.
Paul collected 298 votes, compared with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who collected 263 votes, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who received 132 votes.
It was the only county in the statewide Republican Caucus won by a candidate other than Huckabee or Romney. Drew Ivers, Paul’s state campaign chairman, had predicted prior to Thursday’s caucus that his candidate would win the county.
