More than 700 members of One: The Campaign to Make Poverty History will caucus across Iowa tonight, but its CEO says the organization founded by rock star Bono has already succeeded in Iowa.
“It’s hard to measure success in a non-qualitative way,” said David Lane, Chief Executive Officer of One. “We don’t have any allusions that this is the deciding issue in this campaign, but the people who care about it care about it passionately and so we’ve done a good job of keeping it in front of candidates.”
Lane said a majority of the presidential candidates in both parties have outlined plans for fighting global poverty, hunger, and disease, such as AIDS. The One campaign advocates using a larger portion of the U.S. budget to provide basic necessities to poverty-stricken countries. About 20,000 Iowans have signed a petition in support of the groups efforts.
The organization is one of several special-interest groups in Iowa this year more interested in pushing a cause rather than promoting a specific candidate. Organizations committed to lowering taxes, preserving social security, ending genocide in Sudan and other issues have attended many of the candidates’ events this year.
