Video: Last-Minute Switch in Vinton

By Adam Burke | 12.28.07 | 5:39 pm

When Illinois Sen. Barack Obama asked his audience in Vinton who was still undecided, Stephanie Roepke raised her hand.

But after his speech, she said she had made up her mind and will caucus for Obama on Jan. 3, 2008.

Before the event, she was leaning toward caucusing for Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd and had made Obama her second choice after taking an on-line quiz to see who most closely matched her ideal candidate. The result from the website was Dodd.

But after listening to Obama speak, Roepke changed her mind. She said that the Illinois senator has “a much better chance” than Dodd.

Yet another possibly clueless wonder… …participates in the process that gave us Bush/Cheney. At least she’s participating, which is better than the majority of our citizenry.
I like O’bama. I’ve met him a time or two, I’ve gotten to know some of his staff quite well, I think he would make a good president if he gets the nod.
That being said, the reason he may get the nod is folks like Stephanie here…folks who go against their own better knowledge and judgment and jump all over the flash, grab for the ‘shiny’ instead of the substantial.
If you think back, you’ll remember a big chunk of America voted for Bush because they thought he’d be great to have a beer with. Now, I’m all for beer, but was it worth farking up our nation, our laws, our Constitution, our international relations over? Gore was more competent, as was Kerry, but both displayed the personality of slightly damp 2×4′s. Result? No one wants to have a beer with soggy lumber, so our world goes to hell in a handbasket.
Chris Dodd was clearly the candidate for our friend Stephanie…values and ideals matched. Then she went and saw the show. How ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm…? One question comes to mind, though. Did you go and listen to Chris? Have you met him, talked with him, expressed your concerns and ideas? You’d find it much easier to get a few minutes – or more – of his undivided attention, and you don’t have to get through all those pesky guys in dark suits with the bulge in the armpit to meet him, either. Have you made the attempt? Anyone want to place odds on this?
Stephanie, I do thank you for participating in the process…so few people care enough about the operation and oversight of our democracy to brave this Iowa weather and stand up in front of a room full of strangers and declare what they truly stand for (my rule: if you don’t vote, don’t bitch). You are to be commended, as is everyone who participates, R or D or whatever. I’d just hope you’re not like the Bush-beer crew and actually make informed decisions and not be distracted by shiny things.
