Huckabee Tops Final GOP Power Rankings, Paul Remains Solid Third Place

By admin | 12.28.07 | 2:30 pm

The Republican race in Iowa remains as unpredictable as it was a month ago.  Gov. Mike Huckabee surged, waned, and has steadied his position slightly ahead of Gov. Mitt Romney.  Former Sen. Fred Thompson, who was expected to move up after his recent swing through the state and his high-profile Iowa endorsements, has failed to gain much steam.  Sen. John McCain, who was close to writing Iowa off a month ago, has received newspaper endorsements and renewed attention to coincide with his improving chances nationally.

Today, Iowa Independent releases its final round of power rankings, designed to answer the question, “If the caucuses were held tonight, what would be the results?”  The rankings are derived from impressions we received from activists, campaign officials, seasoned political observers, and rank-and-file caucus-goers, but at the most basic level, they are based on the gut feelings and instincts of our writers, who have watched the race unfold here from the beginning.

A lot can change in six days, and we expect that it will.  But if the caucuses were held tonight, this is how we think they would turn out:

First Place

Mike Huckabee — No doubt about it, Huckabee has firmed up the support of social conservatives and his nice guy routine resonates with enough people that he would likely win Iowa if the caucuses were held tonight. He drew 400 people to a rally in Orange City on the Saturday before Christmas and another 200 people in Sheldon the same day.  He seems to generate more enthusiasm than any other candidates in the Republican field.

Second Place

Mitt Romney — It’s time to see if Romney’s experienced, well-paid staff knows how to close the deal. Romney’s poll numbers have rebounded in the state in recent days and the questions his surrogates have raised about Huckabee’s years as governor in Arkansas continue to sway small numbers of voters.  But it remains to be seen if his strong organization will give him an edge over Huckabee, whose supporters are less organized but perhaps greater in number.

Third Place

Ron Paul – Rival campaigns are beginning to nervously speculate that Paul will finish in the top three on January 3. Paul broke double digits in at least two polls for the first time this week and he seems particularly strong in areas of the state where the media has less of an impact on political deliberations — especially in rural northwest and southern Iowa. Check out a Ron Paul supporters’ websites and you’ll see detailed discussions about caucus rules and strategy. The Paulites are more ready for caucus night than most observers realize.Fourth Place

John McCain — Upward Momentum — Undecided Republicans are breaking toward McCain more than most would have expected, and the additional attention he’s receiving in New Hampshire and South Carolina is translating to more coverage in Iowa in the final days of the campaign.  While newspaper endorsements may not make much of a difference in the GOP race, the surprising number of Iowa newspapers who have endorsed the Arizona senator have at least made more caucus-goers receptive to his message.  And recent news from Pakistan gives him an opportunity to highlight the importance of national security experience.

Fifth Place

Fred Thompson — We can again report that we’re hearing reports that a newly energized Thompson has hit the campaign trail in Iowa. But we’ve said that so many times in the past six months that we don’t necessarily believe it ourselves. Still, with Rep. Steve King and prominent social conservative Bill Salier on the campaign trail for him, it’s hard to believe he hasn’t gained some traction in the state.

Sixth Place

Rudy Giuliani — Who would have believed that “America’s Mayor” would have so much trouble coalescing support in Iowa?  Perhaps Florida will be better for him.

Seventh Place

Duncan Hunter

Ron Paul will win Iowa Mitt cries, Huck’s huckaboom raises a paltry $95,000, Rudy retreats Southward, Tancredo quits, Fred sleeps and Ron Paul raises $6 million dollars in one day.  Except for Dr. Paul, “[t]here’s not a dime’s worth of difference between” Republicans and Democrats.  The Democrats willingly went along with the War in Iraq, suspension of Habeas, banning books like America Deceived (book) from Amazon, warrant-less wiretapping and the PATRIOT ACT.  They are both guilty of treason.
Time to take sides, fellow patriots, you’re either for liberty and Support Dr. Ron Paul or you’re against liberty and damn us all.

Ron Paul 3rd in Iowa, WOW!!!! Ron Paul is showing a 3rd place in Iowa, that is awesome. So why is it that Foxnews is excluding Ron Paul from the New Hampshire Republican debate on January 6th?  What are they afraid of?  I really wanted to see Ron Paul and McCain debate medicinal Marajuana for cancer patients and such. I believe that is what this debate is about, not sure though.  I hope the Ron Paul supporters will take the time to write Foxnews and let them know what they are doing is wrong, unAmerican, and lacks any type of common sense regarding this election process.

The race for third Who would have thought going into this that the GOP race would be such a roller-coaster ride?

I think you’re mostly right with this one. The Huck-o-matic seems to have locked it up for first I think. Romney seems to be making a solid push (calls, ads, press) that’ll keep him buoyed at second.

The real contest seems to be for third. I think it all depends on how the Repubs feel about what’s going on in Pakistan. If they think it shows our failure as a world policeman and a need for new ideas…they may turn to Paul and give him that strong third or even second. If they think that the times demand an “experienced hand” they may shift to the old warhorse McCain and boost him to second or third and leave Paul at fourth. I could see it going either way.

I think Freddie will drop out after Iowa or at least after NH and start gunning for the Veep slot.

A question to anyone who knows the Rep. caucus process: I imagine Tancredo will not be on the secret ballot used on caucus night…but do they allow write in’s? Could he still draw some marginal amount of votes?

  • DWornock

Those who vote decide nothing I hope I am wrong and that the votes count.  However, Ron Paul and his supporters are doing nothing to ensure that his votes are counted. I believe that officially Ron Paul will come in 5th with 4 or 5 percent of the vote. Diebold voting machines will make certain of that.

The American public has waited too long. The bankers and the CFR have total control. They own almost every elected official and all the Federal judges. We the People Foundation has a lawsuit in all fifty states to have paper ballots to be counted at each voting place. Of course it is going nowhere because the powers own the judge.

After the vote many Ron Paul supporters will protest, but there will be a media blackout and the media will televise entertainment programs to keep the public occupied until it is forgotten.

Ron Paul WILL Surprise I think a lot of people are going to be surprised when Dr. Paul sweeps the caucus… just my 2 cents.

I highly suggest any Huckabee supporters (are there any?  they sure can’t raise money…) read up about their mans recent slip about Pakistan “continuing marshall law.”  Do we really need someone so unaware of foreign policy in our oval office?  Oh wait, according to him he’ll shoot us down like those pigeons if we don’t vote for him…

  • Lance

Ron Paul second in Iowa! My prediction is that Ron Paul will take second place in Iowa behind Huckabee. I have a hunch Iowans will lean towards a more traditional Christian candidate when they’re in the booth.

It is becoming apparent that the main stream media is being forced to acknowledge Ron Paul’s viability as a candidate. Suddenly the man with “no shot”, the man conveniently excluded from Fox’s upcoming “Republican” forum is looking like he might place respectfully in possibly the most important primary in decades.

If Ron Paul places in the top three in both Iowa and New Hampshire (which he will) it will be a win for the American people. His candidacy is transcending party lines. His message is resonating with the young and old alike. Americans from all walks of life are joined together in support of this great man.

He has a deep understanding of the American monetary system and the inner workings of our economy. His knowledge on almost any issue concerning our country is leaps and bounds above that of any other candidate.

Ron Paul is for America. The rest are for themselves.

Polls Ron Paul will outright win in Iowa and New Hampshire.  The people being polled are the people that voted for George Bush in 2004.  From that perspective, the numbers the polls are generating make sense.  A good example of the support Rom Paul garners in realation to Huckabee would be the results of each candidates “money bombs.”  On December 16th, Ron Paul raised 6.4 million dollars.  On December 27th, Huckabee raised 95,000.  Dr. Paul raised 60 times more.

Paul will upset in state after state…..get ready….he alone can beat Hillary on socialized medicine, etc The establishment is in for a cold shock – Ron Paul is going to take the ‘whole enchilada’ – I predict a win of several percentage points by him.  The ‘old school’ polling techniques are missing huge pockets of his support.

When you combine conservative Democrats, disgruntled conservative GOP folks, Libertarians, Independents & Constitution Party stalwarts, it adds up to the largest bloc of voters any candidate could gain – and here’s the kicker – Ron Paul has them (or is it that ‘we have him’ – no matter) lock, stock & barrel.

A good guage is the state by state results on the current AOL Straw poll – you can vote any state, for any canidate.  Note how Ron Paul leads in most states, and in many by a commanding margin.  Also note how Romney leads in [Mormon] Utah, (but not by much!), McCain in his home state of Arizona, and Guiliani in New York – so the poll isn’t hardly an example of Paulians spamming.  Here:

    http://news.aol.com/…

You can vote in this till Jan 4th.  Please pass this link round – whomever your supporting.  More users can only increase it’s accuracy.

What is thrilling about Dr. Paul is his candor & honesty.  Americans are sick & tired of being pandered to, even by those of their own party.

He’s Pro-life in a genuine way – no phony posturing.  His ‘sanctity of life’ bill in the house can send the abortion decison back to the states, and in it’s recognition of the human status of the unborn babies, their 5th amendment Constitutional rights can be asserted.

He’s also Pro sound monetary system – no more Federal Reserve unbacked funny money which GUARANTEES inflation eats up your savings and your childrens future.  Inflation is the ‘hidden tax’ – anyone noticed how fuel & groceries are up about 35 % over just two years ago ?

No other canidate is even attempting to address issues he is raising.  They are simply not educated to his level, or lack the moral & spiritual capital to take on the waywardness of postmodern America.

What he says makes both Dems & Republicans tremble in fear – it’s a good thing !

He’s taken a gamble, told the truth to a level deeper than any politician has in 20 years or so, and it’s paying off.  In fact, he isn’t a politician (we’ve plenty of those…) he’s on the way to ‘Statesman’, with Reagan being the last prominent one.

Ron Paul the big wildcard Ron’s coalition of Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarian & Constitution party supporters must be hard to gauge compared to the other candidates less diverse, easier to measure overlapping bases. I think you’re right to put him in the Top Three and third would be a big win for Ron Paul. I wonder in a caucus where the process is so much more time consuming than a primary if Ron’s rabid supporters won’t make it closer to a three way tie? This biased RP supporter can only hope.

Ah, Mike Huckabee… …the guy who, stealing a page from Hillary’s playbook, sent a civilian surrogate to represent him at the Homeless Veterans forum in Cedar Rapids yesterday evening. Even Hillary, who’s shown throughout this campaign she’s not at all in touch with Veterans, sent a vet last night (showing an old dog perhaps can turn a new trick every now and again). Sorry, Mikey, you’re a likable old coot, just like George…doesn’t make you presidential, just like George.
Of course, Romney wasn’t there at all…but by now we all know his idea of patriotic service is sending his kids to drive a bus in Iowa while your kids get to drive an MRAP in Iraq.
Edwards was a no-show as well. Least qualified of the dems, but he’s pretty so there you have it.
