Axelrod: Obama Is ‘Well Traveled’

By Douglas Burns | 12.28.07 | 5:57 am

Barack Obama’s chief strategist David Axelrod tells Iowa Independent that his candidate is “well traveled.” This comes after an interview with Obama in which the Illinois senator and Democratic presidential candidate discussed foreign policy and his experience in Europe.

Iowa Independent: He’s been to Europe more than once?

Axelrod: Yeah, he’s very well traveled.

In the interview in Carroll, Axelrod made the case that Obama’s experiences and broad worldview equip him well for the presidency.

“I think that if you’d speak to people who aren’t running against him and asked them about his grasp, his knowledge, of the world, they would say it’s first-rate,” Axelrod said in an interview before Obama’s speech. “That’s why he’s got so much of the foreign policy establishment, particularly the group that opposed the war in Iraq, all gravitating to him. They understand we need to change not just the war but the mentality that led to it.”

Iowa Independent asked the Obama campaign for a more detailed accounting of Obama’s travels in Europe, both in an official capacity and as a private citizen.  Nearly 48 hours later, we have not received any such information.

This issue has been explored recently in The Washington Note and The Huffington Post.

VOTE FOR WHO CAN WIN 1. Obama polls as the ONLY Candidate that beats ALL Republicans in a General Election match up.

    2. Edwards has NO money to compete in the primary even if he won Iowa.

    3. Hillary is hated by half the Country at the start of a General Election contest. She will motivate and bring out EVERY Republican, Independent and Democrat that already despise her. To vote against her and she WILL lose the General Election to a Republican.

If this were football we would pick the BEST Quarterback to WIN the SEASON & SUPERBOWL and match up data supports that he can BEAT ALL the opponents.

We would not pick a quarterback based on he has a family member who once played for the team or that he could win us just ONE game.

Kansas Well, he has been to a Kansas suburb where he was raised by his upper middle class grandparents.  Well-to-do blacks living with grandparents in white suburbs are treated very well by their neighbors and by their teachers who go overboard in showing everyone that they are not prejudiced. Obama has not been tested.

Claiming to be Well-Traveled I think the issue isn’t that people are being silly and nit-picking, it’s that in response to Bhutto’s death, the Obama campaign opted to get out front to contrast his international experience with that of Clinton, even observing (and this I believe was the candidate himself) that drinking tea with foreign dignitaries was not sufficient. He also suggested in the same speech that living overseas as a boy gave him a broader world view than the other candidates.

Axelrod is making over $800,000 to support his candidate so far. In contrast, Trippi, Edwards’ guy, has made about $86,000. (Mark Penn who works for Clinton has earned in the range of $1 million)

That may be all the world view you need on this one.

Obama Travel Has he traveled the USA. Does he know what the USA has for problems. Can he communicate with the people in the USA who need attention to their problems? Hillary had 8 years within the Clinton administration and now someone is telling me she needs another 8 years to do what she should have done before. The basis for the argument is travel. My God the man (Obama) has been walking the streets of Chicago and solving problems. It is time to get rid of the Clintons, the Bushs and the rest of the clowns who are trying to slip and slide into the White House. If Clinton is good and wants to do something for the USA then she should consult with Obama. Someone has got to give the voter a chance! If someone is asking questions then the Internet is the answer and not waiting for someone who is dependent upon advertising dollars to create an opinion for us. Obama is the only creditable candidate for the problems that we face.

Not Well Traveled He hasn’t even visited Great Britain, our #1 ally.

He thinks because he spent 3 years in Indonesia as a kid that he has experience, but he doesn’t.

He’s Bush-lite. All talk and no experience. We’ve had this for 8 years. Can we please finally elect someone that is smart and experienced?

Obama’s travel Research isn’t hard when you actually are interested in doing it.

“Obama has traveled extensively in his capacity as a member of the Foreign Relations Committee and has visited Russia, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan in Asia; Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, and the Palestinian Territories in the Middle East; and Chad, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa in Africa. Obama has also co-sponsored the “Lugar-Obama Act” with Republican Senator Richard Lugar who was Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations at the time. This act was a bi-partisan effort to increase U.S. security in terms of the elimination of conventional weapons and weapons of mass destruction. This legislation came out of Obama’s trip with Senator Richard Lugar to Russia, the Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Obama has also sponsored legislation such as the “Democratic Republic of Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act” which was signed into law by President Bush on December 22, 2006. Obama has co-sponsored immigration related bills related to his service on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee including the Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act” (www.obamapedia.org/page/Does+Barack+Obama+have+enough+experience+to+be+president%3F?t=anon).

Obama's travels Yep, I actually went online and searched out a source to answer this question.  Low and behold, there were other sites too like HuffPo where Sam Stein's article also discussed Obama's overseas travel as a U.S. Senator –

“Obama's lack of travel to that region of the world (Western Europe), has been, to a certain extent, offset by fact-finding explorations elsewhere. That same year he ventured to Africa, where he had his much-discussed homecoming in Kenya. And, despite traveling only once to London, Obama has met at least three times with then-Prime Minister Tony Blair.”

It's intellectually lazy to disagree or argue against something because you haven't done your own homework… unless you're just prone to being biased against Obama no matter what the facts are.  Then it's just stupid.

Come on, be better than that.

Described on pg. 301-304 I didn't have a copy of the book handy, but someone emailed me the key passages.  He describes his three week trip through Europe on his way to Kenya quite beautifully:

“For three weeks I had traveled alone, down one side of the continent and up the other, by bus and by train mostly, a guidebook in hand.  I took tea by the Thames and watched children chase each other through the chestnut groves of Luxembourg Gardens. I crossed the Plaza Mejor at high noon, with its De Chirico shadows and sparrows swirling across cobalt skies; and watched night fall over the Palstine, waiting for the first stars to appear, listening to the wind and its whispers of mortality.

“And by the end of the first week or so, I realized that I'd made a mistake.  It wasn't that Europe wasn't beautiful; everything was just as I'd imagined it.  It just wasn't mine.  I felt as if I were living out someone else's romance; the incompleteness of my own history stood between me and the sites I saw like a hard pane of glass.” (p. 301)

He continues to write of meeting a man from Senegal in Spain and traveling with him for a while.  When they part, he writes, at first he feels that he'd like to go with the man, imagining a “life of open roads,” but concludes that the encounter itself was enough:  “[M]aybe that was all any of us had a right to expect:  a chance encounter, a shared story, the act of small kindness . . .” (p.303)  And then he goes to Africa.

well-traveled not the issue… what u do is I don't think it's really an issue of how many countries he has visited, although I would like to see Barack provide more info regarding his European travels.  (note: I'm an Obama supporter)

I think it's more important what one does, when one has an opportunity to effect positive change.  His August 2006 trip to Kenya and South Africa speak volumes about what Senator Obama is capable of…  In Kenya, he and his wife openly took an HIV test and he criticized corruption in the Kenyan government.  Brave actions and words that demonstrate true leadership.

Furthermore, when visiting South Africa and meeting with the Treatment Action Campaign, he had these words to say regarding the South African health minister, who is notorious for providing incorrect medical information by greatly exaggerating the side-effects of HIV medications and by promoting the supposed benefits of high-dose multivitamins (and of other quack concoctions):

“On the treatment side the information being provided by the minister of health is not accurate. It is not an issue of Western science versus African science, it is just science and it's not right.”

and later on he criticized Mbeki's quite diplomacy regarding Zimbabwe, when saying “South Africa has tried a strategy of quiet diplomacy… I don't think it has been as successful as it could have been. I would like to see a more vocal policy in respect of human rights and pressing the Mugabe government to right the ship.”

And We're Looking to the Wisdom of Iwoan's to Pick a President? Gotta love this bonehead. “He hasn't even visited Great Britain, our #1 ally.” Umm, let's see – a few entries up the page and oh, look here, a quote from one of his books: “…I took tea by the Thames …”. Ummm, you see the Thames is a river that runs through London that is actually a city in England or 'Great Britain' as you witless midwesterners call it. Jump into the new millenium when you get a chance, maybe pick up a map of the world. Jeebus, it's no wonder that the candidates only show up in your backwater burgs once every four years. I can imagine that they can barely tolerate your ignorant homespun wit and wisdom for only a few hours at a time. Why do you think most of them don't want to take your questions at their events anymore? Take a night class or two, get up off your grotesquely fat butts and help the world see your part of the world as something more than flyover country! And to think you people are allowed to vote…cornpone fools!

Why is it that we live in a time when more information is readily available than has ever been in the history of the species and we have to see ignorant tripe like the above from morons who wouldn't know how to think for themselves if you gave them a manual! You idiots are so frustrating! You continue to make America a mockery in the eyes of the rest of the world! Get off your fat lazy butts and actually learn something you slobs!
