Radio host, pastor insult senator’s Christianity

By Jason Hancock | 05.22.09 | 4:14 pm

WHO-AM radio host Steve Deace spent an hour of his show Thursday questioning the faith of Democratic state Sen. Matt McCoy, Iowa’s only openly gay legislator.

Deace and his pastor, Bob Deever of Grace West Church in West Des Moines, said that McCoy calling himself a Christian is a “statement of ignorance.”

“It’s best not to let those lies go unchallenged,” Deace said.

During a recent roundtable discussion on same-sex marriage organized by The Des Moines Register, McCoy said that ultimately the issue is about fairness,  a principal in line with his Christian beliefs.

“I am a Christian and I like to talk about the fact that I think Christians can disagree about this subject,” he said. “One particular view should not dominate another religious view on this issue.”

McCoy is an active member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines.

Deever said McCoy has developed a God in his mind to allow him to do the things he wants to do, and because he is openly gay McCoy can’t be a Christian.

“You’re going to have to determine what you’re going to believe: your self deception and what you think it is or God’s truth and what he says it is,” he said.

Deace then hearkened longingly for the days when a homosexual could not “live this way without any sort of societal retribution for them.”

“Those days are long gone, and we live in an era where the homosexual lobby basically lived at the legislature this year,” he said.

“Deace then hearkened longingly for the days when a homosexual could not “live this way without any sort of societal retribution for them.””

What? Like lynching? Scary article. If I had any money to spend in the first place, I would boycott his employer's sponsors.

  • turkeystone

Sounds to me like Mr. Deace could use a dose of “societal retribution” himself; say, a poor job performance rating from his employer? And if I may, another question: Who exactly is it that has Mr. Deace and Mr. Deever as being qualified to cast even the first stone at Mr. McCoy?

idonovan is correct. Scary article. And a boycott of WHO would not be out of line until such time as they reprimand Herr Deace.

    • slincoln

I only listen to WHO during bad weather anymore. They have basically lost all shred of credibility with me. And fanatical idiot Steve Deace is just the top of the cake.

“Have they no sense of the Gospel?”

This would be funny if it were not so tragic. The Apostle Paul very plainly speaks of homosexual acts (acts, not people) as a perversion. You have to do some serious intellectual compromising to claim to believe in the Gospels while rejecting Paul.

You cannot seriously claim to be a Christian while rejecting the pieces of the New Testament that you dislike. It's somewhat on par with a person claiming to be Amish while insisting on maintaining possesssion of a cellphone & computer or a devout Jew or Muslim who eats pork.

  • slincoln

Steve Deace is a fanatical idiot. There is no other way to put it. And now, beyond that, it's apparent that he is not a christian. It's best that his lies do not go unchallenged.

  • desmoinesdem

I am becoming more and more convinced that Republicans will overplay what they think is a winning hand on gay marriage. This kind of talk is repellent to everyone but the hard-core GOP base.

    • slincoln

Especially the youth of our state, that we are trying to prevent from leaving in droves. Just the other day, the YMCA Youth Legislature passed a marriage equality bill by something like 90 to 10. The war is over. The future of our state and our nation does not care. Marriage equality and liberty will happen, whether the ignorant like it or not.

  • QuoVadisAnima

But no worries, we live in a brave new age now where soon people like Deace will be stripped of their right to free speech so that homosexuals may force people they dislike to keep their offensive beliefs to themselves. (Wake up & look at what just happened in New Hampshire's legislature – this isn't really about a right to marry, but about forcing people of faith to accept their way of life)

Yes, homosexuals are well on their way to being more equal than the rest of us…

  • conchfritters

Hey Steve! Move down to Topeka with Rev Phelps and join his crowd – you are both the same!!! Funny how the ratings for your show are plummeting below Drive time Des Moines before you. And your show is supposed to be a political discussion show. It's hard to have a discussion with someone who constantly argues – “they invisible guy in the sky told me so”. Same argument Al Queda uses – - you're not much different Steve!
