“[Couples] should not be discriminated against whether they are heterosexual, gay or lesbian [...] Still, I guess if everything were equal, my proclivity would be to have a heterosexual couple.”

In effect, Harkin is saying "You shouldn't discriminate against gays and lesbians, but given my druthers I still would."

I'm a supporter of Tom's from way back-- his first campaign coffee in his first campaign was in my family's living room, and I leafletted for him when I was twelve-- but every now and then he says something I think is bass-ackward, and this is one of those times.

Multiple studies and multiple medical professional associations have concluded that children raised by same-sex couples turn out just as well on average as do kids raised by different-sex couples.

Any "proclivity" Tom still feels against adoption agencies placing kids with same-sex couples isn't a "proclivity", it's a lingering trace of bigotry. Tom doesn't need to have his press flack smear ex poste facto lipstick on that pig, he needs to simply get over it. Mike Gronstal stepped up like a man and did Iowa proud, and Tom should do the same.

I say the above with love, but I'm still saying it.
