Maine Gov. John Baldacci made his state the fifth in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage, signing the legislation into law today.
The Pine Tree State joins Iowa, Vermont, Connecticut and Massachusetts in defining marriage as the legal union of two people rather than between a man and a women.
“In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions,” Baldacci said in a statement. “I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.”
The District of Columbia could join this group shortly, as its city council passed a resolution recognizing same-sex marriage that Mayor Adrian Fenty has said he will sign.
