Harkin: Huckabee The Republican To Watch In Iowa — And Beyond

By Douglas Burns | 11.15.07 | 4:05 pm

But veteran senator calls presidential candidate’s Social Security
one-time payout plan ‘wacky’

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) today said the Republican presidential candidate to watch in Iowa and nationally is former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee has been surging in polls and garnering more media attention.

“I tell you who you ought to keep your eye on,” Harkin said. “You ought to keep your eye on Mike Huckabee. I’m telling you, I think he could pull off some big surprises in the state of Iowa and beyond.”

Harkin — who himself has been a champion of fresh fruits and vegetables for schoolchildren and has gone so far as to take issue with Hollywood titans for their use of the cartoon character Shrek for marketing candy to kids – credits Huckabee with zeroing on preventative health measures in the campaign.

“I’ve talked to Mike about this on more than one occasion,” Harkin said. “He gets it and he’s coming, so I tell you: look out.”

Harkin is not similarly impressed with Huckabee’s plan to provide a one-time Social Security payout to seniors with a certain level of wealth, a vague plan Huckabee has talked about in debates and forums.

“I heard about it and it just sounds like something he just threw out there for something,” Harkin said. “That will not go anywhere. I can’t imagine that getting support from anybody. I didn’t say that I agree with everything. That’s sort of a wacky proposal. That’s not going anywhere.”

Huckabee’s FairTax- A Cultural Seachange Mike Huckabee’s ardent support for the FairTax Act of 2007 (HR 25/ S 1025) sets him apart from all other viable presidential candidates. The FairTax represents a power shift of massive proportions in America. It lays out a practical ideal of voluntary payment of taxes, based on a substantial level of taxpayer choice that the plan affords.  Since FairTax untaxes basic necessities (up to socially-accepted poverty-level spending), what is taxed is marginal, and/or desired or preferred, on a broader base of retail products and services.  This is to say that the taxpayer may, under the FairTax, choose to purchase used products and avoid paying the tax.  And, to the extent desired, the taxpayer may choose to self-perform certain services rather than pay for them. This will stimulate do-it-yourself education, improve citizens’ self-reliance; indeed the FairTax represents the possibility of ushering in a new can-do, citizen psychology that would accrue to greater demands for government accountability – truly, a cultural sea change.

Government is the “necessary glue” that enables the social fabric to cohere. It does this by effecting “rules” that ostensibly provide members with equitable access to wealth and resources. It also must provide ostensibly equitable enforcement of those rules in order to mitigate threats to the social fabric. It is unrealistic to believe that the structures of a national government can be supported on donations, thus the need for taxes. Naysayers love to characterize anything purporting to be a “fair tax” as an oxymoron – but it is not true. The idea of fairness has to do with equitable sharing in the cost by all members who depend upon the social fabric for food, shelter, clothing and post-necessity economic enterprise. And, because of the shift of power from politicians and special interests under an enacted FairTax, the elected will find it more difficult to both enlarge government, and implement any dual system of taxation. FairTax strategist, Dennis Calabrese, discusses how the FairTax repeals the income tax, how it does away with the IRS, and how it addresses other aspects of frequent concern to skeptics.

The FairTax has a much greater opportunity for success to operate as a “self-regulating” mechanism because of increased visibility.  One finds that the current system, ostensibly regulated by the Internal Revenue Code, is in fact poorly regulated because of continually increasing complexity (the effect of tax favors from politicians, through lobbyists, to favored corporations and other special interests) stemming from the desire by those holding government position to steer public behavior using tax code “carrots.”  We have seen how 100 years of this type of behavior has eroded the Nation’s currency and the purchasing power of working family incomes.  “Visionist,” Tom Frey believes the current tax system will simply collapse; and economist Laurence Kotlikoff heralds – short of enactment of FairTax (or an otherwise unlikely change in spending habits) – the U.S. will shortly face an irrevocable economic breakdown. (Kotlikoff believes that passage of the FairTax can stave off the economic ruin we’re facing, but would be surprised to see it happen.)

Frey and Kotlikoff may be right on both counts, and we may not be able to successfully evoke change; but shall we not try? Mike Huckabee believes we should.

Huckabee Is cool under pressure, Talks straight, Has a Plan… I like that I watched Mike Huckabee on Fox today. He is cool under pressure, his 23% flat tax to get rid of the IRS is as he said. Fair and is a benifit to all classes.
He said to check it out , I googled it and most of the questions he was hit with by Chris Wallace and it all checks out…

That’s amazing! A politician that has answers to questions, that when checked out are correct.
I had over looked this guy until now. But this is the real thing. He is genuine, a person, not a robot.

My gut feeling is that he will be the Republican Candidate and would demolish Hillary or any other person they put up. AND I am a Democrat.

Huckabee the only reasonable choice Huckabee wants to close our boarders.  Security of our country is a constitutional job of the Federal government and Huckabee gets that point.  He also wants to see conservative judges in the Supreme court and see Energy conservation as our 2nd priority.  The critics complaints are lame at best and all the minor issues of “tax increase” was also, after seeking details on the subject, needed to stay up with the inflation of doing business in the United States, like license providing and so on.  Huckabee ran his state very well with money left in the State Bank Accounts when he left.  He is the best choice of the ones going.  Romney is a in a Cult religion, Rudy, although I'm sure he's a great guy, lacks my trust because he is just “getting a clue” about very important subjects.. like killing babies and the immigration issues… nah,,, Rudy is not the one, McCain is a good choice for VICE PRES, but not the president.  The rest… well forget about it.  Huckabee is the best choice mostly because he has a heart for God.  If you humble yourself to your knees when you make decisions then you can't go that far wrong.
