King, NOM polling eastern Iowans

By Lynda Waddington | 04.22.09 | 11:30 am

Eastern Iowa residents have received a telephone poll on same-sex marriage in which caller ID shows the same Washington, D.C. phone number, several recipients tell the Iowa Independent.

In some cases, the first voice on the recorded call is U.S. Rep. Steve King (R-Kiron).  Similar calls were reported in central Iowa last week.

Residents have reported that their caller ID reads “FRNKCMPN” or “WASHINGTON, D.C.” along with the phone number 202-461-3452. In some cases, the caller is a representative of the National Organization for Marriage, a conservative group against same-sex marriage. In other cases, however, the call begins with a welcome message from King.

The automated survey questions are similar, if not exact, on each call. Those who answer are asked if they are a registered voter. The answer to the following question, which asks if the person supports marriage as being between only one man and one woman, is a deal-breaker. If the person chooses “no,” the call returns to a recording of King offering his thanks and noting that the call was paid for by the National Organization for Marriage. Those who answer yes are given additional survey questions and more information about “the fight for traditional marriage.”

The survey calls appear to have begun Tuesday and are continuing in the area today. Last week, similar calls from the same number were reported in central Iowa. Prior to and during that time residents in Connecticut also reported receiving calls regarding same-sex marriage from this number. The same phone service was also used to promote “tea parties” earlier this month.

I got one of these calls in Fort Dodge. I gave the “wrong” initial answer, and they said thank you and hung up. I don't have caller ID on my land line, so I cannot confirm the number. This happened on Monday, April 20, 2009 about 1:00pm.

I dont have much respect for what Steve King says in regards to civil marriage. Nor do I think the opinion of NOM matters, either. They are one of the most parodied groups in recent history. They seem to think people are still dumb on the issue of civil rights, and that people can easily be duped into believing their exaggerated-at-best melo-dramas in their anti-gay commercials. They are wrong. Iowa has a long tradition of being ahead of the times in civil rights – and it wont be ending today.

Perhaps when a real non-partisan polling firm begins to poll the state, I'll begin to pay attention.

I live in northcentral IA and I've had 3 of these phone calls last week and so far in the last 24 hours, I've had 4 more! This King person is from the 5th District. Why is his robo calling me, I'm not even from his district???? If I was from his district, I still wouldn't vote for the annoying a**hole! How dare he call my private phone 7 times trying to influence me with his beliefs! This is harassment………I wish something could be done to stop this CRAP!

The question was designed to confuse as well. If I recall, his recording asked me if I believed that a marriage between a man and a woman under Iowa law should be binding.

That is some real push polling right there. I expected such, gave the right answer and was summarily thanked and goodbyed.
