After defeating 30-year incumbent, Jim Leach, in a close race in Iowa’s 2nd District, Rep. Dave Loebsack, along with fellow freshman Rep. Bruce Braley, helped initiate and pass a bill in the House honoring Mr. Leach for his dedicated service to Iowans.Rep. Dave Loebsack released the following statement:
Today, HR 1505, a bill to rename the Davenport federal courthouse the “James A. Leach United States Courthouse,” was passed by the US House of Representatives. Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Waterloo) and Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-Mt. Vernon) and introduced the renaming bill in March.
Former Congressman Jim Leach represented the Second Congressional District of Iowa in the US House of Representatives for 30 years. Leach left a lasting impact on Iowa, and Reps. Braley and Loebsack felt compelled to honor his long-standing service and commitment.
Rep. Bruce Braley (D-Waterloo) said of the bill’s passage, “The House of Representatives today has honored one of its most respected members by passing this renaming bill. Jim Leach had a long and distinguished career of public service representing the citizens of eastern Iowa. He served Iowa in Congress in a way that reflected the spirit of its people: with principle, independence, and hard work.
“I can think of no more fitting tribute to this Davenport native than to name the ‘James A. Leach United States Courthouse’ in his honor.”
“Jim Leach is a native son of Iowa and throughout his time in Congress his representation of the state was based upon the values of the people he represented and of Davenport , the town he grew up in,” said Congressman Loebsack. “Jim Leach represented Iowa ‘s Second District with grace and distinction for 30 years. His legacy of statesmanship, his leadership in foreign affairs, and his dedication to public service left a lasting impact on the district I am now honored to represent.”
The bill will now move to the Senate for approval. Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Charles Grassely (R-IA) introduced similar legislation in the United States Senate.
