Dave Price, the political reporter for Des Moines NBC affiliate WHO-TV, decided to look into the political affiliation of the seven Supreme Court Justices in the aftermath of their historic verdict striking down Iowa’s ban on same-sex marriage.

What he found isn’t too surprising. Cheif Justice Marsha Ternus and Justice Mark Cady, the two appointed by former Republican Gov. Terry Branstad, along with Justice David Baker, Gov. Chet Culver’s appointee, are listed as “no party.” Justices Michael Streit, David Wiggins and Daryl Hecht, all appointed by former Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack, are registered Democrats.

Justice Brent Appel, who is married to Democratic State Sen. Staci Appel and was appointed by Vilsack, is listed as “no party” as well.

At a rally at the statehouse Thursday, opponents of same-sex marraige made it clear they will work to oust Ternus, Streit and Baker, each of whom are up for re-appointment in 2010. Supreme court justices are up for retention votes every eight years.

(Baker was chosen in 2008 to finish the term of retiring Justice Jerry Larso, so he is up for retention early.)
