If popular vote can be used to take rights away from someone, then any right is open to be denied anyone.

If it was popular vote that was used to award (or deny) classes of citizens their human and/or civil rights, consider for a second how much discrimination would still be practiced today.

Studies have suggested that $10s of millions of dollars could come into state revenues from allow equal marriage in Iowa. Around $5 million a year from committed Iowa couples, and $5+ million from out of state couples and their tourism to the state. It pays to be fair-minded!

Economic issues matter and marriage is an economic issue. Studies show that married people are slightly healthier (less costs) and wealthier (pay more taxes) than their single counterparts and this is true for gay people as well. Therefore, it is in the state's best economic interest to grant marriage equality.

Re:

“Might be the opportunity to have a convention to reaffirm our commitment to hardworking people; to work at that convention to ensure we continue to fight for our teachers; to work at that convention to protect seniors and their rights; to work at that convention to protect veterans,” Culver said.

Let's see here.... hardworking people, teachers, seniors, veterans... fight for them... none of them are gay! (yeah right)
