The article mentions that the pesticide methoxychlor could cause human spontaneous abortions. However, methoxchor is no longer on the market, so exposure to this pesticide is quite unlikely. In addition, methoxchlor is estrogenic in rodents and can interfer with pregnancy in these species at high dosage levels on the order of 100's of mg/kg/d oral. However, unlike rodents humans produce high levels of estrogens during pregnancy so they are not as sensitive to this form of disruption. Estrogens can be a problem in aquatic systems (primarily ethinyl estradiol) and they can cause premature breast development in young girls and gynecomastia in young boys, a period of life when estrogen levels are very low.
