Rep. Elesha Gayman, D-Davenport, will support a Democratic tax reform proposal that includes eliminating federal deductibility despite media speculation that she would vote against it.

The confusion started when a survey Gayman filled out for the River Cities Reader showed her as a “no” vote on eliminating federal deductibility, which allows state residents to write off their federal taxes on state returns.

Gayman told the Iowa Independent that the survey asked only if she supported repealing federal deductibility as a stand alone issue, which she does not.

“However, I believe the current plan of reducing state income tax by an average of 22 percent for 94 percent of my district is something I am happy to support,” she said. “I believe it is a much needed relief to middle class families in my district.”

Debate on the tax reform proposal was originally expected to take place today but was postponed. Four conservative Democrats told IowaPolitics.com that they will oppose the measure, meaning Democrats had only two votes to spare in order to pass their plan.
