Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley has made news several times over the past few weeks for aggressive comments related to the bonuses paid to executives in the failed financial services wing of AIG, the insurance giant that has received billions of bailout dollars from the federal government.
If you were wondering how much of it was intentional and how much of it wasn’t, consider this: Grassley was reportedly surprised when Linn County GOP Chair Tim Palmer asked him about the controversies.
I found it somewhat amusing when I asked the Senator about his frequent trips to the banner position of the Drudge Report in the last few weeks and he was seemingly “unaware” of his celebrity status. I had to explain his “3″ recent splashes onto the blogs and news cycles including the “honor & suicide, sucking in the tit of the taxpayer,” and of course his recent comment to Senator Kent Conrad where he quipped, “your wife said the same thing” after Conrad said, “Oh you are good.”
Seeing first hand just how surprised and bemused Grassley was, it truly occurred to me just how little attention he pays to himself and how much of his work is focused on behalf of us Iowans.
