Bike To Work Week: Gas More Expensive Than Milk

By John Deeth | 05.14.07 | 5:04 am

As Bike To Work Week kicks off, a quick price comparison at the Iowa City Waterfront Hy-Vee shows that fuel for bikers is cheaper than fuel for cars:

Unleaded: $3.299 a gallon
Hy-Vee Brand 2% Milk: $2.99 a gallon

The cars still have the edge for higher-end fuel:

Super Unleaded (the ethanol stuff): $3.19 a gallon
Hy-Vee Brand Orange Juice: $3.98 a gallon

No stats on miles per gallon.

Bicyclists of Iowa City was giving free fuel to bike commuters (try that, Texaco) at College Green Park this morning.  In an exercise in participatory journalism, I found the pancakes quite tasty.  If you missed out, there’s more free flapjacks tomorrow from 7 to 9 AM at Coralville New Pioneer Co-op.

Photos later but for now here’s gratuitous YouTube video of George Bush falling off a bike:

It’s a sad fact that “Bicycle Race” by Queen is the only known rock song about bicycles.  We were hoping for more but the Sheryl Crow-Lance Armstrong relationship crashed and burned.

So it looks like Queen and only Queen tonight for the Great Bike Bus Car race.  Will Senator Joe Bolkcom be singing “We Are The Champions” as he crosses the finish line?  Or will it be Supervisor Sally Stutsman and “I’m In Love With My Car”?  Perhaps we’ll hear the Iowa City Council’s Amy Correia and “Another One Rides The Bus.” (Yes, I know it’s Weird Al.  Close enough.)
