Repeat immigration offender earns two years behind bars

By Lynda Waddington | 03.19.09 | 1:07 pm

A 26-year-old man from Mexico who previously broke immigration laws and was either deported or left the U.S. voluntarily will now receive a taxpayer-funded two year stint in a federal prison.

Jose Trujillo-Perez pleaded guilty in November to knowingly transporting five illegal immigrants from Arizona to Iowa. He was sentenced Tuesday in Sioux City federal court to two years behind bars for his crime.

On Nov. 5 an Iowa State Patrol officer stopped the van Trujillo-Perez was driving in Woodbury County and then discovered the immigrants inside. Prior to the incident, Trujillo-Perez had been arrested and deported twice, and had been arrested and allowed to voluntarily leave the country 10 times.

Following the imposed prison term, the man will also serve a two-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.

Trujillo-Perez was placed in the custody of the U.S. Marshal’s Office until he could be transported to a federal prison.
