The House Ethics Committee will meet at 10 a.m. Monday to discuss Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement’s ethics complaint against state Rep. Dolores Mertz, D-Ottosen.
The group filed the formal ethics complaint against Mertz Tuesday. It calls for House leadership to remove her as chair of the House Agriculture Committee because of her family and financial ties to the factory farm industry. Mertz’s sons have owned a 4,000-head hog factory in southern Kossuth County for the last decade. In their complaint, CCI said the farm has been cited for five violations in the last five years.
A source in the statehouse told the Iowa Independent the complaint is not likely to result in the removal of Mertz from her committee position.
