Journalist shield law introduced in U.S. House

By Jason Hancock | 02.13.09 | 11:09 am

The Free Flow of Information Act of 2009, known as the federal shield law, was reintroduced Wednesday in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The bill would set a federal standard when courts can and cannot compel journalists to reveal anonymous sources. Across the country, 31 states already have state shield laws and 18 other states have recognized the reporter’s privilege.

Last year’s version of the bill hit several roadblocks  thanks in part to President George W. Bush, who promised to veto it. During the 2008 campaign, both Barack Obama and John McCain supported a federal shield law.

Iowa currently has no journalist shield law.

Good I think it is ridiculous to give journalists the same privilege that counselors, pastors, and doctors have.

Not even the same level. Especially lately when people who talk to the media hide behind their anonymity in order to smear and lie about people.
