The Senate vote fell mostly along party lines. Three Republicans — Senators Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine and Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania — sided with the majority Democrats to approve the estimated $838 billion package. The corresponding bill in the U.S. House passed with no Republican votes and fewer bipartisan compromises.
The next step in the legislative process is a conference committee, which will merge the House and Senate versions of the stimulus package into a mutually agreeable bill.
