As the idea of expanding broadband internet access to rural parts of the country gets batted around think tanks and congressional offices, one consultant with experience training large companies’ employees to use the web says the access alone is not enough. From a smart op-ed published last week on the rural policy site Daily Yonder, here’s what Frank Odasz has to say:
As Congress discusses rural broadband as part of the nation’s economic stimulus package, nearly all the focus has been on broadband access. Is it worth spending billions to extend broadband to rural areas? It’s a legitimate question. Once access is achieved, the telephone and cable companies will have met their goal, but the challenge for citizens and communities to produce jobs and income will have just begun.
Broadband does not create jobs, Odasz argues. People create jobs, and they need training and an entrepreneurial spark before they will be able to use broadband to create wealth. You can read Odasz’s full post here.
