A resolution that would define marriage as between one man and one woman may go before the Sioux City Council again next week.
The Sioux City Journal reports that Councilman Dave Ferris told his colleagues he plans to reintroduce the resolution at the council’s next meeting.
The idea was first brought to the council in December when it was deferred until the council attorney could determine if the board had the legal authority to pass the resolution. That legal opinion was never actually sought as Council Attorney Andrew Mai said he dropped the matter when it seemed the resolution was no longer an issue.
It would be an entirely symbolic move since cities lack authority over marriage. But the resolution’s original sponsor said that it would direct city departments, boards and commissions to stay in line with the council’s position despite the fact that council voted in March to add sexual orientation as one of the protected classes of citizens to bring the city’s Human Rights Commission in step with state civil rights code.
Ferris told the Journal he wants the city to lobby the legislature to pass a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage.
