During a taping of Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press,” state Auditor David Vaudt said taxpayers will have to decide whether they really want the services their state government provides, and if they do they will have to pay for them in more taxes.

So, the real key is citizens also need to understand that we can’t do everything unless they’re going to pay more taxes and fees and if they don’t want to pay more taxes and fees then they’re going to have to take the consequences.

Vaudt, a Republican from West Des Moines, also addressed rumors that he is considering a run for governor in 2010.

Yeah, people have asked me to at least give it some consideration so I haven’t ruled it out. But right now I’m going to stay focused on how we get Iowa through this next budget cycle.
